Reduce Detention, Joe Biden Terminates US Government Contracts with Private Prison
President of the United States (US) Joe Biden prohibited the Ministry of Justice from continuing contracts with private prison facilities. The policy is taken through an executive order that has been signed by him.
In an order issued on January 26, 2021, President Joe Biden stated that many minorities are imprisoned in the US, so that the prison system is burdensome for the community and does not make it safe.
Joe Biden then prohibited the government from working with private prison facilities to reduce arrests and detentions.
“To reduce incarceration levels, we must reduce the profit incentive for incarceration by removing the Federal Government’s dependence on privately run criminal detention facilities,” said Joe Biden as reported by the White House website, Wednesday (27/1/2021).
As a solution, Joe Biden said the prison system would prioritize rehabilitation and redemption. Meanwhile, private prisons are considered to have failed to help in preparing for convicts when they were released.
“Individuals who are incarcerated should be given a fair opportunity for full reintegration to their communities, including participating in programs designed to have a living income, have affordable housing, and participate in our democracy as fellow citizens,” said Biden.
Joe Biden said Federal Government prisons must ensure humane treatment. However, he said private prisons had failed to meet the same standards.
Based on the findings of the Ministry of Justice in 2016, private prison facilities do not have that level of safety and security for the people who work there.
“We have a duty to provide these individuals with safe working and living conditions,” said Biden.
Although only a few days in office, Joe Biden has signed about 30 executive orders.
The US president can make rules with executive orders without going through the Senate. The weakness of this method is that it can be removed by the next president.
